Application of a micro-respirometric volumetric method to respiratory measurements of larvae of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Wolowicz, Maciej; Latala, Adam; Brown, Craig; Cragg, Simon.
The application of a simple, fast and reliable volumetric microrespirometric method to assess respiration of bivalve larvae is discussed. As a model, C. gigas larvae of various sizes were used. Metabolic activity of veliger larvae was assessed by measuring respiratory rate for use in ecophysiological modelling. As an example of the application of this approach, additional measurements of veliger respiratory rates were carried out to assess the effect on larval metabolism of different concentrations of leachate from wood treated with chromated copper-arsenate (CCA). Veligers of Crassostrea gigas (length from 95 to 331 pm) were fed with a mixture of Isochrysis galbana) and Chaetoceros pumilum cells. Experiments were performed in a 20 degreesC constant...

Effect of fire under the soils on the organization of communities of three remnants of Amazonian savannas Acta Botanica
Santos,Ronaldo Oliveira dos; Souza,Alan Pena de; Soares,Rubiene Neto; Rabelo,Fernando Galvão; Silva,Breno Marques da Silva e; Costa Neto,Salustiano Vilar da.
ABSTRACT Areas of cerrado (Brazilian savanna) in the Amazon have been poorly studied from the perspective of fire impacts on environmental sustainability, especially with regard to disturbances to soil and vegetation structure. This study aimed to analyze the influence of edaphic variables and fire together on the composition and structure of tree and shrub vegetation of three cerrado remnants in the Amazon. Eight plots were systematically installed in burned and unburned environments in each remnant. Data were submitted to floristic diversity, similarity, and diametric and altimetric structural assessments. Phytosociological parameters were obtained and submitted to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). A total of...

Finding patterns of distribution for freshwater phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish, by means of parsimony analysis of endemicity RChHN
OYANEDEL,J. PABLO; VEGA-RETTER,CAREN; SCOTT,SERGIO; HINOJOSA,LUIS FELIPE; RAMOS-JILIBERTO,RODRIGO.
During the last decades, limnological studies on Chilean systems have contributed to know the species composition and main environmental variables of many water bodies distributed over a wide latitudinal interval, from 18º to 53º S. However, we still lack of a comprehensive view about the structure and functioning of regional freshwaters. In this work we review the available information about pelagic biota from Chilean basins, in order to reveal patterns of species distribution and their possible association with environmental variables. We built presence-absence matrices for phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish over lakes and basins. From this database, we performed parsimony analysis of endemicity as a tool for determining fundamental distribution...

Impact du traitement de bois (CCA) sur l'écophysiologie de la moule M. edulis ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe.
In European waters, crustaceans and molluscs cause substantial economic damage on wooden structures. Chemical preservatives, such as chromated copper arsenate (CCA) have been developed to protect wood from rotting and are commonly used in many countries.
